While having long flowing hair is the dream of many people, hair unfortunately takes a rather long time to grow out. Some people are lucky enough to have genetically healthy and fast growing hair, but most of us aren’t that lucky. Hair grows an average of half an inch per month, and although there are not shortcuts you can take to growing long hair, there are certain things you can do to aid growth and health of hair.
6 Top Tips for Healthier Hair Growth
1. Eat a Healthy Diet
Nutrient deficiencies are a very prominent reason for hair loss or unhealthy hair, so a healthy diet rich with organic food and nutrients is a great first step to improving the look of hair. Here’s a list of those nutrients that are most vital to healthy hair:
- Vitamins A, B, E
- Vitamin B-complex
- Iron
- Zinc
- Copper
- Magnesium
- Selenium
These nutrients can be found in a wide range of healthy, organic foods. Try to incorporate the following products into your diet on a regular basis:
- Proteins: chicken, eggs,
- Dairy: milk, cheese, yogurt
- Veggies: spinach, broccoli, bell peppers, cabbage, parsley, alfalfa
- Fruits: grapefruit, avocado
- Grains: whole grains, brown bread, oats
- Omega-3 fatty acid-rich food: fish, flax seeds, walnuts, beans, squash, olive oil
2. Take Vitamin Supplements
In addition to maintaining a healthy diet, you can take supplements to increase nutrients and mineral levels in your body that contribute to hair health. Folic acid, biotin and B-complex vitamins (vitamin B9 and B7 respectively) are especially good for aiding the faster growth of hair.
In addition to these three types, kelp, fish oil, flaxseed oil, evening primrose oil, ginseng, ginkgo biloba, and saw palmetto are all fantastic supplements that you can try. Always exercise caution with supplements, and consult a doctor if you are unsure about taking any.
3. Make an Egg Mask
Eggs help sustain hair from the inside of your body, but they also make a great hair mask to strength and nourish hair on the outside. Here’s how to make it:
- Whisk an egg
- Mix in four tbsp. of grapeseed oil
- Mix in a few drops of lavender
- Apply it on hair and scalp, and leave it on for half an hour
- Rinse it out and shampoo hair as usual
Note that you should only use an egg mask on your hair once a month.
4. Use an Herbal Infusion on Your Hair
Rosemary, catnip, nettle, burdock, horsetail, and sage are all ideal herbs for promoting faster hair growth. Make an herbal infusion by steeping one of these herbs in hot water for 10-20 minutes, and using it as a final rinse for your hair after shampooing and conditioning. Rosemary in particular is a good choice to use because it stimulates hair follicles and brings the shine back to your hair.
5. Nourish Hair with Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is great for preventing hair loss and restoring a sleek shine to your hair. Here are three ways to incorporate it:
- Massage aloe vera gel mixed with a little lemon juice into your hair. Leave on for about 20 min, then shampoo your hair. Repeat once or twice a week,
- Combine aloe vera gel with equal amounts of coconut milk and wheat germ oil and apply to your hair.
- Drink aloe vera juice regularly
6. Use Castor Oil
Castor Oil is rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids. To apply to hair, mix the oil with an equal amount or coconut oil or olive oil. Massage onto scalp and leave for 45 minutes, then shampoo hair. Add your herbal infusion to this mix if you’d like.
